George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens

It is certain, George Washington slept here! Lovingly restored by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association who purchased Mount Vernon from the Washington family in 1858. The Ladies' Association opened the estate to the public in 1860. Considered one of the earliest historic preservation sites in America, Mount Vernon is still maintained and kept open for tours by the non-profit Ladies' Association, who do so without government assistance or tax dollars.

The beloved home of George and Martha Washington, Mount Vernon is one of the most popular historic estates in America. Overlooking the Potomac, the reverence for the place extends to both sides of the river where construction is limited to provide "close to" original views. Built in stages as he could afford to build, George Washington oversaw the construction of the Manor House and out buildings, and through the years he expanded his original house from six rooms to twenty one. He also designed the grounds landscaping which includes 13 trees which still remain today, the last living witnesses of Washington’s lifetime.

The home is filled with 18th-century antiques, many of which were owned by George and Martha. Gardens with heirloom plantings known to have been here during Washington's lifetime adorn the property. There are the tombs of George and Martha Washington on site and the George Washington: Pioneer Farmer Site with a 16-sided treading barn and featuring 18th century crops and farm management demonstrations. Three miles away but on original estate property are a 1771 century 16-foot waterwheel grist mill with an adjacent distillery which was the largest in the country in 1799.

Two new centers are now open with support from Ford Motor Company and the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The Ford Orientation Center is a must-see first stop with detailed miniatures of Mount Vernon and an overview of what is to be seen. It has been called the "gateway for generations of young Americans to learn about George Washington." The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center features 23 galleries and theater experiences that focuses on life at Mount Vernon and the true George Washington.

Located only 16 miles from Washington, Mount Vernon is also 2 centuries away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Estate is open seven days a week, year-round (even on Christmas), and also presents special tours, activities and programs throughout the year. Check our Calendar of Events for programs offered during the time of your visit.
