This attraction is an aquarium with live animal habitats, indoor and outdoor venues including a salt marsh trail, outdoor aviary, hands-on exhibits & a 3-D imaging I-MAX film theater. A great place to visit rain or shine and located only a short trip from the resort strip!
Exhibits include Norfolk Canyon Aquarium with seals to deep sea creatures such as shark, Cownose rays, Loggerhead sea turtles and other ocean creatures. The Bay & Ocean Pavilion features the aquatic plants and animals in the local bays and rivers and includes crabs, fish, green turtles, birds and otters along with touch pools for hands-on experiences. On site there is also a marsh with coastal woodlands with trails to be explored. New exhibits are to open in late 2009, called the "Restless Planet" with unique coastal animals and habitat from other parts of the world.
While you are here in Virginia Beach check-out the Virginia Aquarium’s Encounter programs, a hands-on or first-hand experience. Seasonal programs vary and include winter whale-watching boat trips as well as multi-seaonal dolphin watching, salt marsh cruises and summer ocean collection boat trips. Other encounters include a 90 minute "Seal Splash" with a 20-minute in-water behavioral training session with the harbor seals or "Sea Turtles: Behind the Scenes". Both tours showcase specific aquarium operations as well as offering animal contact or close-up viewings.
