Richmond International Raceway

Richmond International Raceway

The Richmond International Raceway is well known as a NASCAR race track, with national races in the spring and fall that draws in fans from up and down the East Coast and a NASCAR history that dates back to Richard Petty's "Grand National Division" win in 1953. The track also hosts racing schools, indoor and outdoor car, boat and RV shows and more. But the raceway is not the whole concept here. Also known as the Richmond International Raceway Complex, this venue also houses six permanent buildings with more than 300,000 square feet of exhibition and meeting space, an eight-acre forestry area with gazebos and covered pavilions and an outdoor amphitheater, all in this one 1,000 acre multi-purpose facility.

Richmond International Raceway is a ¾ - mile D-Shaped oval shaped race track which hosts the NASCAR Nationwide Series 250 and Crown Royal 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in the spring and the NASCAR Nationwide Series 250 and the "One Last Race to Make the Chase" NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in the fall. An IndyCar open-wheel racing weekend is also an annual feature event at the track. The 15,000 square foot Torque Club, high up in the grandstands, seats 300 with a view of the track and is a state of the art facility with drop down audio visual screens and themed bars. During the year several race driving schools hold some revved-up classes for the public and they include the Richard Petty Driving Experience, the NASCAR Racing Experience and the Mario Andretti Racing Experience.

Popular events that take place on the grounds of the Raceway Complex include an Italian Festival, the Christmas Craftsmen Classic, The Bizarre Bazaar as well as gun shows, gem & jewelry shows, Southern Women's Show and a host of other trade shows and community events. Exhibition buildings in the complex include Expo Hall with 60,000 square feet of exhibit space & meeting rooms. Other facilities include the Old Dominion Building, the Colonial Building, and Henrico Hall, each with between 9,000 and 36,000 square feet of exhibition space, so more than one event may be taking place at any given time.

The outdoor Classic Amphitheater is located just outside the racetrack stadium and hosts headliner concerts and community events with seating up to 10,000. Gardens and gazebos also are a part of some event venues here. The Richmond International Raceway is a unique complex and one the region has proudly patronized which has kept the facility current and updated.
